Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do you do custom work?
Absolutely. We love building something one of a kind. Head over to our custom work page to see what we offer and how to get started.

How do I place a custom order?
Easy. Just reach out through our contact page or drop us a line at contact@wildboardstudio.com. Give us the specifics of what you are looking for and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

    Do you accept returns?
Yes. You can find all the details on our return policy page.

  • What kinds of customization do you offer?
Quite a bit. We offer laser engraving services as well as fully custom boards built from scratch to your specifications. The sky is really the limit. Reach out and let us know what you have in mind.

    What does laser engraving cost?
Laser engraving is available on most of our products for a flat fee of $50. Before placing your order, reach out through our contact page or email us at contact@wildboardstudio.com so we can talk through the details. The engraving fee is invoiced separately once everything is confirmed.

Is the engraving fee waived on custom orders?
Yes. If you are placing a full custom order, the engraving fee is included. No extra charge.

Can I choose my wood species?
100%. On custom work, the choices are yours. That said, we are always happy to help steer you in the right direction based on your needs. That is what we are here for.

How long does a custom order take?
It depends on the project and our current workload. In most cutting board cases we ask for three weeks from the agreed upon start date. We will give you a clear timeline when we discuss your project.

Is there a minimum order amount for custom work?
Yes. Because custom jobs work their way into our normal production schedule, we require a minimum order of $500 to get the project started. Sizing and scope are always part of the conversation and we work through those details together.

Do you require a deposit on custom orders?
Yes. We ask for a 50% deposit upfront to cover the cost of materials specific to your project.

    Is the deposit refundable?
No. Once a deposit is placed we immediately put it toward purchasing the materials for your project. Because of that we are unable to issue refunds on deposits. We want to make sure every project is something you are excited about before we get started, so we take the time upfront to get all the details right.

  • How long will my order take to arrive?
We ship all orders via USPS Ground Advantage from our West Jordan, UT. location. Delivery times vary by location but most domestic orders arrive within 2 to 8 business days once shipped.

How long does processing take after I place an order?
Most orders are processed and ready to ship within 2 business days. Custom orders will take longer depending on the scope of work.

    Do you ship internationally?
Not yet, but stay tuned. We are working on it.

  • Can I see your products in person before buying?
We do not have a brick and mortar storefront open to the public, but you can absolutely see our products in person. We set up at markets throughout the Salt Lake City area during the summer months. If you are local to Utah, come find us. If not, we think the drive might just be worth it. Sign up for our mailing list to be the first to know where we will be.

  • What kind of wood do you use?
We work with a wide variety of species, but our favorites and most commonly used are Walnut, Cherry, and Maple. Each one brings something different to the table in terms of grain, color, and character.

Why hardwood? Is it better than other materials?
It really depends on the application. For cutting boards we choose hardwoods because they stand up to the kind of abuse a kitchen dishes out. They are dense, durable, and when properly cared for, they last a very long time.

Are the glues used in your boards food safe?
Yes. Any product we offer that is meant to come in contact with food is built using only food safe glues from start to finish.

    Are your boards truly handmade?
Yes. Every board is handcrafted in small batches right here in our Utah shop. The milling, gluing, routing, shaping, sanding, and finishing are all done by hand, one step at a time. We do not move to the next step until the prior one is complete. That kind of attention to detail is where we find the value of our boards, and we think you will too.

Why are your boards priced higher than what I see at the store?
The boards you typically find in stores are mass produced in large overseas facilities where production and material costs are kept as low as possible. That is how they hit those price points. Our boards are different. We hand select our rough lumber from our suppliers and mill everything to spec ourselves. Every step of the process, from start to finish, is done by hand in our Utah shop. That level of care is where we find the price not only justified, but premium. We think once you hold one, you will agree.

What is the difference between end grain and edge grain cutting boards?
Great question, and one worth understanding before you buy. Here is the analogy we like to use.

Picture a large bundle of toothpicks. An end grain board is like that bundle standing straight up, with all the tips facing up. That is the surface you are cutting on. When your knife comes down, the blade slides between the wood fibers rather than across them. This gives end grain boards a self healing quality of sorts, and makes them exceptionally gentle on knife edges.

Now tip that same bundle onto its side. That is an edge grain board. The fibers run the length of the surface, revealing some of the most beautiful grain characteristics wood has to offer. Edge grain boards are still incredibly functional cutting surfaces and will hold up well for years with proper care.

Both are excellent choices. It really comes down to how you want your board to look and perform.

Are your cutting boards easy on knives?
Yes. Both end grain and edge grain boards will serve you well for a long time before you need to think about sharpening or truing a blade. That said, end grain boards are slightly more forgiving on knife edges due to the way the wood fibers are oriented. Either way you are in good hands.

Do you offer standard sizing, and can I request a custom size?
Yes. Our cutting boards fall within what most people would consider standard sizing. If you need something outside of that, custom sizing is always an option. Head over to our custom work page for more details.

  • How do I care for my cutting board?
Caring for your board is easier than you might think, but doing it right matters. Check out our free care guide for everything you need to know.

Can I put my cutting board in the dishwasher?
Never. None of our products are dishwasher safe. The high heat and moisture will warp, cup, or crack your board over time, and sometimes quickly. It does not matter how big or small the board is. Keep it out of the dishwasher.

What causes a board to warp or crack?
We like to think of wooden kitchen products as living tools. Wood breathes and responds to its environment just like people and animals do, and it needs to be cared for the same way. Moisture and water are the number one cause of cupping, warping, and cracking. The good news is that most of these issues are completely avoidable with proper care. See our free care guide for everything you need to know about keeping your board in great shape for years to come.

How often should I oil my board?
Let the board tell you. When it starts to look and feel dried out, that is your cue to apply a coat of conditioner. There is no strict schedule, just pay attention to it and it will let you know.

What should I use to condition my board?
We recommend our own Wild Board Conditioner. That said, any food safe cutting board conditioner or pure mineral oil will get the job done just fine.

  • Are your cutting boards and butcher blocks finished with food safe materials?
Yes. Every piece that comes in contact with food is finished with our own Wild Board Conditioner. It is food safe, made to protect the wood, and built to keep your board performing for years.

Is the wood you use food safe?
Absolutely. The hardwoods we use in our cutting boards have been used as food preparation surfaces for generations upon generations. While we cannot speak to every individual's specific allergies to certain wood species, we only work with materials that are widely recognized as safe for food contact. If you have a known sensitivity to a specific species, feel free to reach out and we will help you find the right fit.

  • Are your products made to order or do you keep items in stock?
We keep inventory of most items available on the website. If something you want is showing as out of stock, reach out and let us know. We will work to get it out to you as soon as possible.

  • Do you sell apparel and accessories?
We sure do. We currently offer hats, beanies, and tees — all Wild Board Studio logo wear. A great way to rep the brand wherever you go.

    Who fulfills your apparel orders?
We work with a trusted third party partner to handle all of our print on demand apparel orders. You buy, they ship, and they do a great job. It allows us to keep our focus on what we do best — building premium handcrafted boards right here in our Utah shop.

Will my apparel and other products ship together if I order both?
Nope. Because our apparel is fulfilled separately from our handcrafted products, those items will ship from different locations and may arrive at different times. Do not be alarmed if your cutting board shows up before your hat, or the other way around.

How long does apparel take to produce and ship?
Apparel orders typically take 3 to 7 days to produce before they are shipped out. Once shipped, delivery is generally another 3 to 4 business days depending on your location. Keep in mind these are estimates and some orders may take a little longer.

What is your return policy on apparel?
If you receive an item with a quality issue or the wrong item entirely, we want to know about it right away. Reach out to us at contact@wildboardstudio.com and we will work quickly to make it right. Because our apparel is print on demand and fulfilled through a third party partner, we are unable to accept returns or exchanges for sizing or a change of heart. We recommend checking the size chart on the product page carefully before placing your order so you end up with exactly what you are looking for.

How do I find the right size for hats and tees?
Easy. Our hats are all one size fits all Richardson 112 Snapback Truckers, so no size chart needed there. For tees, we have a full sizing chart included in the product images on each product page. Give it a look before you order to make sure you get the right fit.

  • Do you offer gift cards?
Not at this time, but it is something we are working toward. If you are looking for a gift and are not sure which board to choose, feel free to reach out and we will help you find the right fit.

Do you offer gift packaging or gift messages?
We do not offer gift packaging at this time. If you have a special request, reach out and we will do our best to work something out.

Can you ship directly to a gift recipient?
Of course. Just provide the recipient's name and address at checkout and we will take care of the rest. You can also send us an email communication at contact@wildboardstudio.com to get the details straight before ordering.

  • Is it safe to order on your website?
Yes. Our checkout is secured with SSL encryption, which protects your personal and payment information during every transaction. We do not store your payment details, and all orders are processed through trusted, secure payment systems.

What payment methods do you accept?
We accept all major credit cards as well as Apple Pay and Google Pay. We also offer buy now pay later options through Klarna, available at checkout for eligible orders.

Can I make changes to my order after placing it?
We begin processing orders fairly quickly after they are placed, so changes may not always be possible. If you need to make an update, reach out as soon as possible and we will do everything we can to help before your order is fulfilled. Once an order has been processed or shipped, changes are no longer possible.

  • Do you work with restaurants, retailers, or corporate clients?
Yes. We work with all of those client types and love those conversations. We do not have a formal wholesale structure in place at this time, but we are always happy to talk. Reach out through our contact page and let us know what you have in mind.

  • Do you have a customer service phone number?
We do not have a business line at this time. The best way to reach us is at contact@wildboardstudio.com. You can also find us on most major social media platforms. We are happy to help however we can.
